Mr White Game Roles Explained

Civilian

Most players are Civilians. Every Civilian receives the same secret word drawn from our built-in game words list. Your job is to give clues that prove you know the word — without making it too obvious for the Undercover to copy. Civilians win by voting out every infiltrator.

Undercover

The Undercover role receives a word that is similar to the Civilian word but different. Close enough to give convincing clues, different enough to mislead the group. The Undercover must blend in with the Civilians while steering suspicion elsewhere. Undercover wins by surviving until infiltrators equal Civilians in number.

Mr White

Mr White receives no word at all. This is the hardest and most thrilling role in the game. Mr White must listen carefully to everyone else's clues, deduce what the Civilian word might be, and bluff convincingly every single round. If Mr White is voted out, they get one final chance — a last guess at the Civilian word. Get it right and the infiltrators steal the round.

Mr White Game Rules — Step by Step

Step 1

Setup

Open the game, enter player names, and choose how many Undercover and Mr White roles to include. The phone assigns roles randomly and selects a secret pairing from our 200+ word pairs.

Step 2

Secret Reveal

Pass the phone around the table. Each player holds the screen to see their role and word privately, then hands it to the next person without showing anyone. Nobody else sees your role or word.

Step 3

Clue Round

Starting from any player, everyone gives exactly one short clue about their word. Civilians describe the real word honestly. The Undercover describes their similar-but-different word carefully. Mr White bluffs based on what they've heard.

Step 4

Debate and Vote

After all clues are given, the group debates openly. Anyone can accuse anyone. When ready, the group votes to eliminate one player. The eliminated player's role is revealed to everyone.

Step 5

Repeat or End

If no win condition is met, a new clue round begins with the remaining players. Keep playing until one side wins.

How to Win Mr White Game

How Civilians Win

Civilians win by successfully voting out every Undercover and Mr White player. Work together, compare clues carefully, and identify who seems to be describing something slightly different.

How Infiltrators Win

The Undercover and Mr White win together by surviving long enough that the number of infiltrators equals the number of Civilians. At that point the Civilians can no longer outvote them.

The Mr White Last Guess

If the group votes out Mr White, the game pauses for a final moment. Mr White gets one guess at the Civilian word. If they guess correctly, the infiltrators win the round despite Mr White being eliminated. This makes voting out Mr White a risk — if you're wrong about their word, they can still steal the win.

Tips for Playing Each Role

Tips for Civilians

  • • Give clues that are specific enough to prove you know the word but not so obvious that the Undercover can copy them
  • • Pay attention to clues that feel slightly off — that's your Undercover
  • • Don't vote too early — wait for patterns to emerge across multiple clues

Tips for Undercover

  • • Your word is close to the Civilian word — lean into the overlap
  • • Avoid being too vague — it draws suspicion faster than a confident wrong clue
  • • Watch who seems certain and align with their language

Tips for Mr White

  • • Listen before you speak — the first round is survival, not performance
  • • Pick up on repeated themes in other clues and mirror them loosely
  • • Be confident — hesitation is what gets Mr White caught
