What Is the Undercover Game?

The Undercover game — also called Mr White online or the undercover word game — is a social deduction party game for 3 or more players. Every player receives a secret word, except one: Mr White, who gets no word at all and must bluff.

Most players are Civilians sharing the same word. One player is the Undercover, who gets a word similar to the Civilian word but subtly different. One player is Mr White, who gets nothing and must fake it entirely.

Everyone gives one clue per round. Then the group debates and votes someone out. The game continues until one side wins.

This version of the undercover game online runs entirely in your browser. No app download. No account. Open the page, set your roles, and start in under ten seconds.

Undercover Game Roles

Civilian

Civilians receive the real secret word. Give clues that prove you know the word without being so obvious that the Undercover can copy you. Civilians win by voting out every infiltrator before being outnumbered.

Undercover

The Undercover receives a word similar to the Civilian word — close enough to sound convincing, different enough to mislead. Your goal is to blend in, avoid suspicion, and survive long enough to equal the Civilians in number.

Mr White

Mr White gets no word at all. You must listen to everyone's clues, deduce what the Civilian word might be, and bluff confidently every round. If voted out, you get one final guess at the Civilian word — get it right and your team steals the win.

How to Play the Undercover Game

Step 1 — Setup

Open mrwhiteonline.com/play/, enter player names, and choose how many Undercover and Mr White roles to include. Roles are assigned randomly and secretly.

Step 2 — Secret Reveal

Pass the phone around. Each player privately views their role and word, then hands the phone to the next person. Nobody else sees your screen.

Step 3 — Clue Round

Everyone gives one short clue about their word. Civilians describe the real word. The Undercover describes their similar word. Mr White bluffs.

Step 4 — Debate and Vote

The group discusses, accuses, and votes to eliminate one player. Their role is revealed after the vote.

Step 5 — Win or Continue

Check win conditions. If nobody has won, start a new clue round with the remaining players.

Undercover Game Win Conditions

Civilians

Civilians win by voting out every Undercover and Mr White player before being outnumbered.

Infiltrators

Infiltrators win when the number of Undercover and Mr White players equals the number of remaining Civilians — at that point Civilians can no longer outvote them.

Mr White last guess

If Mr White is voted out, they get one final chance to guess the Civilian word. A correct guess means the infiltrators win even though Mr White was eliminated.

Undercover Game Online vs App

Most people searching for an undercover game app are party planners or hosts who just want something that works instantly without killing the vibe. Mr White Online is built specifically to solve the friction of traditional party game apps. Open the site on any single phone, and it behaves exactly like a native app from the first tap.

The biggest issue with native apps for a one-time party game is the setup barrier. Asking your friends at a bar or Airbnb to open the App Store, remember their passwords, clear storage space, and accept invasive tracking permissions takes 15 minutes of precious party time. Not to mention the frustration of aggressive paywalls and forced account creations once the app is finally installed.

Unlike a downloaded app, Mr White Online runs entirely in your browser using a seamless pass-and-play mechanic. One device handles the entire lobby. If your group is already sitting together, you can go from zero to playing your first round in under ten seconds. Plus, it leverages modern web technology to work completely offline once the page has loaded, meaning you won't get interrupted by spotty Wi-Fi in the basement or on a road trip.

Undercover Game Words — How They Work

Every round in the Undercover game is built around a word pair. The Civilians get one word, the Undercover gets a related but different word. The gap between the two words determines the difficulty.

Easy example: Civilians get "Cat", Undercover gets "Dog"

Medium example: Civilians get "Coffee", Undercover gets "Tea"

Hard example: Civilians get "River", Undercover gets "Canal"

Mr White Online includes over 200+ curated word pairs across three difficulty levels — Easy, Medium, and Hard. You can also set a custom difficulty to control how obvious or subtle the word gap is.

The word list is designed so that every pair creates a genuine debate. Close enough that the Undercover can survive a few rounds. Different enough that a sharp Civilian can catch them.
